Here we will explain what RC5 exactly is and how you can install and configute it.

Let's get started shall we ...

What is RC5 and what is Belarus Team exactly?

RC5 is the name of one of the projects run by Distributed.Net. The purpose is to find the person who can break the RC5 72-bit encryption key. Belarus Team was originated as a project for group of friends and like-minded people, interested in computing and having fun, who had some roots to Belarus or just simply interested in this place on Earth, it's history, culture, etc...:-) and now we have people from all over the world in our team!

So tell me ... why would it be interesting for me to join the Belarus team?

First you will support Republic of Belarus in this project (we really need your help because of lack of computer resources inside of our country) and second there is some money involved ... RSA Labs, the company behind RC5, is donating $10.000 to the team that cracks the key. The money will be distributed as such:

  • $1000 to the winner
  • $1000 to the team or also to the winner if he is not member of a team ...
  • $6000 to a non-profit organisation
  • $1200 to distributed.net for giving us the software, servers, code, ... needed to run RC5

Secondly there are also the bragging rights: the time it takes to complete a workpacket depends on the power of your computer. This way we can brag to each other how fast (or how slow) our computer can finish a packet. Isn't that why we are all overclocking our cpu's ... to brag about it?

Who can join?

Anybody can join our team ... no matter who you are or where you live, how fast or how slow your computer is! Every block counts in the race so you are all very welcome :).

Ok ... I decided I want to join the team ... what do I need?

Well ... nothing much actually ;). Just a computer and the client software from Distributed.net. You can download the client you need here, according to your computer, OS, ...

I downloaded the client ... now what?

1) Double-click on the client software you downloaded and install it. Leave all options set the way there are. If needed you can change the installation path.

2) once you installed it the client should pop up and ask you to configure everything. First choose "1) General Options" ... then choose "1) Your email address". Enter a valid emai laddress you have access to. The client will use this to identify the blocks you send to the servers and use it to give the credits to you. After you entered the address press enter and go back to the main menu. Now select "2) Buffer options". Then choose "9) Load-work precedence". Change the order to DES:0,CSC:0,OGR:0,RC5. Type it exactly like the part in italic. once done go back to the main menu, and choose "Save and exit". Congratulations ... you have configured the client!

3) Now the client is running. You MUST run the client until he completes one or more work packets. When he has finished a packet, richt-click on the head of the cow in your taskbar and choose "Update". This will send already completed packets to the server and then your account is activated.

[ Please wait 24 hours before going on to the next step! ]

4) Now the first thing you need to do is get your password. You can get your password by going to this page. In the textbox you can see underneath "Participants Stats" you must enter the email address you used when you configured the client. Press the submit button when entered ...
Then you will see your email adress in a hyperlink. Click on it ... this will take you to your personal statistics page of RC5. At the bottom of this page is a link named "I can't remember my password. Please email it to me". Click this link and the password will be send to the email address you entered when you configured the client.

5) Now go to the Belarus RC5 page by using this link. At the bottom you can see a link called "I want to join this team". Click it! This will bring up a messagebox where you can enter a username and a password. Enter your email address (the one you used when you configred the client) in the "user name" box and entered the obtained password in the "password" box. Then press "OK".

Congratulations! You have just joined the Belarus RC5 team.

WELCOME IN THE TEAM AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING!
